Good pensions matter, and we're building a better future for our members, our people and the communities where we live and work.

OPTrust was established to give Plan members and the Government of Ontario an equal voice in the administration of the OPSEU Pension Plan and the management of the assets through joint trusteeship. OPTrust is governed by a 10-member Board of Trustees, five of whom are appointed by OPSEU/SEFPO and five by the Government of Ontario.

OPTrust is subject to federal and Ontario laws governing registered pension plans. As the plan administrator, our role is to prudently manage the Plan’s assets, ensure that members receive the pension benefits to which they are entitled, and provide them with the finest service and communications.

Our history

The Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union Pension Plan (the OPSEU Pension Plan or simply, the Plan) was established pursuant to a Sponsorship Agreement between the Province of Ontario and OPSEU/SEFPO dated April 18, 1994. Ontario enacted the Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union Pension Act, 1994, effective June 23, 1994, to implement certain aspects of the Sponsorship Agreement. Ontario and OPSEU/SEFPO entered into an Agreement and Declaration of Trust dated Oct. 25, 1994 to establish the Plan, its trust fund and related board of trustees.

The board of trustees is the administrator of the Plan and the trustees of the trust fund (Board of Trustees). OPTrust is our business name. The name of the trust fund is OPSEU Pension Plan Trust Fund, and this name may be used to refer to the Board of Trustees for legal purposes. 

OPTrust officially began operating on Jan. 1, 1995.
