TORONTO, Jun. 13, 2025 – OPTrust, one of Canada’s largest defined benefit pension plans, is celebrating 30 years of delivering service and security to members. Following a joint agreement by OPSEU and the Government of Ontario to establish a jointly sponsored pension plan for OPSEU-represented workers, OPTrust commenced operations in 1995. Since inception, OPTrust’s membership has grown by more than 65 per cent from just under 70,000 in 1995, and assets have increased nearly fivefold. Today, OPTrust serves more than 114,000 members and delivers retirement security to retirees in every corner of Ontario, remitting more than $1.4 billion in annual pension payments.
“Over the past three decades, OPTrust has grown into one of the most respected pension organizations in Canada — delivering on its mandate with integrity and discipline,” said OPTrust Board Chair, Richard Nesbitt. “As the Plan has grown, OPTrust has become an integral part of the Ontario economy — providing peace of mind to retirees, supporting local businesses and jobs, and growing our economy.”

“For 30 years, OPTrust has grown, innovated and evolved — all while staying laser-focused on our mission: paying pensions today and preserving pensions for tomorrow,” said Peter Lindley, President and CEO of OPTrust. “Thank you to everyone on our team — past and present — who helped shape this organization into what it is today as we continue to deliver secure, predictable pensions.”
